Chapter Eight

In the morning Tony woke early, showered and dried his hair. He dressed in a dark tee shirt over cargo pants and deck shoes. He went to the back cabin that was their meeting room.

Breakfast was set out as usual. This morning Tony took a box of cereal, emptied some into a bowl, poured milk and sat on one of the tall stools so he could watch the others. Dom and Buzz were already at the back table eating. BJ came in, gave Tony his famous big smile and put a large amount of cereal into a big bowl, grabbed a couple of bagels, a canister of cream cheese and a quart of milk. He went over to join the guys at the back table.

Top Notch came in with Wes. Top Notch was like BJ, big appetite, but Wes settled for a cup of coffee as he sat on the couch. He was carrying papers that he put on the low table in front of him.

“We have three guys who are working for a firm out of Detroit. They started out with the right ideas but something went wrong along the way. They feel it is the right thing to do to kill someone in the name of the U.S. Government, even if the guy is a U.S. citizen and hasn’t broken any rules. But this guy owns some property that is in the way of something that someone wants. These three don’t even ask questions any more. Someone just points and they shoot.”

Wes took a long sip of his coffee then looked over at Anthony. “Tony got us info that says someone pointed these guys at a nice man in New Orleans by the name of Jason Bruer the Third. Tony is wondering why we don’t just tell Jason Bruer the Third and alert the police?”

Then the men started explaining, each one adding in their own words.

“No proof for the police.”

“You got the info illegally.”

“Why would the guy believe us?”

“Who are we, just a bunch of strangers who he would wonder why we would even want to help him?”

“If we move him these guys get another assignment and go after someone else.”

“It is better to go after the rodents and eliminate them than try to just plug up the mouse holes and think the house is clean.”

“So what do we do?” Wes asked the question and Tony’s eyes went back to him. “We have all faced this question at one time or another when we chose this way of life. Now you have to ask it of yourself.”

Tony sat there and became aware that all of the eyes were on him. Wait a minute. He hadn’t signed up for this. He hadn’t signed up for anything, he had been drawn into it, kicking and screaming with no choice. He had been told that he didn’t have to do anything that he didn’t want to do, just computer stuff. Now all the eyes were on him. Why?

“Hey, I am a computer geek.
